Strunal Violins, how do they compare with other makes

          Back to articles

Strunal violins are made in the Czech Republic, and are a long established violin manufacturer. The constuction of their violins are all done to a high craftsmanship level, as you would expect from a European violin maker. We've done comparisons with the Chinese made violins and other European makes, in the price range of £250 and up, and found the Stunal to be a high quality instrument in build and sound.

Comparing the Strunal violins to the Gliga violins, we found that it was really a matter of preferance to which were better. Some violinist said the Gliga had a slightly darker tone whlist others said the Strunal was a little brighter, more in line with the modern German violins. Though they all thought the feel and build of both makes was very good.

A Short History: Strunal is the largest string instruments manufacturing facility in Europe. Located in the picturesque town Luby in the western part of the Czech Republic Strunal successfully builds upon a long lasting and rich tradition established by master craftsmen since second half of the sixteenth century.

Initially these master craftsmen started making violins in their homes. Later several of them found effective to get together and form small manufacturing groups making violins, lutes, bows, guitars and other string instruments. By 1873 the Luby school of violin making was established. For generations some of Strunal's finest violin makers have been educated at the Luby school.

Today, Strunal utilizes the traditional craftsmanship of experienced violin and guitar makers as well as state of the art tooling and technology designed by  Strunal's own engineers.
Using quality tone woods guarante that instruments made by Strunal have superb acoustic features, with traditional European design and quality. Strunal's instruments are designed and produced for professional artists as well as for advanced or beginning students.

Currently, the company employs about 100 employees,  and each year the company makes approximately 4000 violins, approximately 500 violas, 1000 cellos and double basses and more than 2000 bows and other accessories for musical instruments.
Violins manufactured by Strunal are recommended to students by a concert master Jaroslav Svěcený.
