This instrument has well tuned bars . It has a rich, sonorous sound and would form the middle voice element of an ensemble of pitched percussion. It plays the lower line of the classroom orchestra. (If setting up a classroom with tuned percussion, one should also consider the German Studio 49 make.)
Alto metallophones work well with the other parts of the metal chorus, ie the Soprano metallophone, and bass metallophone.
This ensemble is well compeimented by the choir of xylophones, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass.
It is worth mentioning, that any ensemble needs only one bass for each choir, ideally one Bass Metallophone and one Bass Xylophone.
These sets of instruments will form the central core of the Orff-based Classroom orchestra.
Naturally, all these instruments would, ideally, have the chromatic halves!
