It took a while, but thankfully manufacturers are starting to catch on to the fact that the left handed population might just fancy an electro ukulele, or a uke with a cutaway - or in the case of this Baton Rouge left handed tenor electro ukulele, both. While for regular acoustic ukulele, the option is there to convert for left handers by swapping over the strings - with a cutaway that's no good, as a left hander may want easy access to the higher frets - just not with their thumb! And with electro ukuleles, the controls end up on the bottom for a left hander, and the jack lead can usually be found in just the right position to stick into your armpit if you are left handed.
Thankfully, this very nice Baton Rouge tenor electro solves both problems, being built specfically for left handers, and crucially, costing just the same price as the right handed version. Add to that a very nice specification, with solid German spruce top, good playability, a bright sound and fine looks and rather than missing out, left handers are in for a treat. There is an active Shadow EQ with tone and volume controls that allow you to plug in - if required. However, it should be noted that this Baton Rouge ukulele has plenty of punch acoustically too, with a strong, bold tone.
With Aquila strings and a solid spruce top, this is certainly a bright, full sounding ukulele - and if you wanted to mellow it out a bit, you might want to consider some Worth brown strings. But, that isn't a criticism of the sound as it is, just a suggestion if you want to give this instrument a warmer voice.
The Baton Rouge has the rather awkward official name of 'UR 4-TCE LEFT'. Which is a little on the clunky side! But, thankfully this tenor ukulele is a lot more elegant to look at than its name would suggest. And, it is really well thought out for left handers, even down to the fret position markers down the neck being on the correct side for a lefty! A very nice, and long overdue left handed tenor electro ukulele.
