The Kala KA-8E is a good option as an entry level electro 8 string. By calling it 'entry level', that does something of a disservice to the very nice looks, full, fascinating tone and playability of this 8 string tenor uke - but the fact remains it is a cheaper option than some in a relatively niche market.

It certainly looks the part, with the Kala KA-8E featuring a nicely grained laminate mahogany body, and a slotted headstock with gold Kala logo. There is a flawless gloss finish and the body has off-white binding on the body and fingerboard, with black and white purfling and soundhole rosette.

There is a Nubone nut and saddle which add a nice ring to the 8 strings, and the Aquila strings lend a brightness to the rich, flowing tone the KA-8E delivers. The body is a laminate mahogany, which in part explains the fact that is isn't as expensive as some electro 8-string tenor ukes. In general, solid top or all solid ukuleles do perform better - but such is the fullness of tone from 8 strings, that effect is less noteworthy in a model like this. If you can afford all your ukes to be all solid, great (let us know - we will happily help!!!!), but if like most of us, you have to temper your ukulele desires with a practical budget - then a laminate body 8 string is not a bad option to cut a corner. The rich, chiming sound and well above average loudness of this Kala KA-8E really compensate for the laminate body.

Completing the picture, there is an active Shadow preamp with tone and volume controls - with a handy jack input socket that doubles as a strap button. Amplified performance is good too, with a great, punchy sound.
