The all solid acacia series from Kala is one of their flagship lines, and they are produced to a really high standard. This is the electro concert version, the KA-ASAC-CE. As well as all solid tonewood and some lovely decorative features, the concert ukulele is fitted with a Shadow active preamp with tone and volume controls and a chrome jack socket - which is centrally located to double as a strap button.

This is an ideal ukulele for gigging and recording, with a rich, complex tone which is really pleasant - and well recreated through the on-board electrics. Although the tone is full and warm, there are some lovely, sweet overtones that make this a particularly pleasing ukulele to listen to. The Kala KA-ASAC-CE is also a feast for the eyes, with gorgeous fishbone purfling, rosewood binding and a layered headstock. Add to that the impressive wood grain, and it looks as good as it sounds.

While you would be right to expect a great finish and nice set-up on a ukulele in this price bracket, this Kala KA-ASAC-CE doesn't disappoint on either front. The 18 nickel frets are perfectly smooth and level, the rosewood fingerboard feels nice, with a high grade of wood used, and your finger positions are nicely marked out with a vine pattern, as well as dot markers down the neck. The whole thing is topped off with very robust closed, geared tuners, which are both effective, and nice looking with their black buttons.

The Kala KA-ASAC-CE is something of a rarity, with not a massive selection of concert electro ukes available that are this quality. So, it is nice to see a really fine looking electro in concert size, with a delicate, warm tone.
