This Kala KA-CGE is a nice looking version of the Kala KA-CE, with a gloss finish. This isn't the only difference, with nice black and white binding added, and particularly nice mahogany selected - which really is brought out by the strong gloss finish. There are fret position markers at 5th,7th,10th and 12th frets on neck and on the rosewood fingerboard.
The Kala KA-CGE features a UK-300TR active preamp with tone and volume controls, together with a very handy little feature, an easy to use built in tuner - a real bonus in comparison to playing with a clip on uke tuner on your headstock. This is a good little unit, used on plenty of Kala's more expensive models, and gives a good representation of ukulele tone through to your amp.
Aquila strings are fitted to the KA-CGE concert electro, and it has very robust closed, geared machine heads with sturdy, nice-feeling chrome buttons. This combination sees tuning remaining stable, with only slight tweaks (with the handy onboard tuner) needed between sessions.
The KA-CGE electro acoustic ukulele has a 14 and 7/8" scale length. The body length is 11 inches, the upper bout 6 inches and the lower one 8 and a half inches. The width at the nut is 1 and 3/8 inches and it has a depth of 2 and 3/4 inches. All of these measurements are quite standard in the concert ukulele world, meaning it will fit into standard sized ukulele gig bags and cases.
The tone of the Kala KA-CGE is really very nice, with plenty of volume - not dimmed at all by the gloss finish. The sound is medium bright, with good projection - certainly a tone good enough to justify the bit of extra expense over Kala's more basic models. It looks smart too, without being over the top. We could have truncated this description quite significantly if we'd just said 'It plays well, looks nice and sounds good'.
