This is a really top-drawer ukulele from Kala, with a solid cedar top and solid rosewood back and sides. The Kala KA-SRT-CTG-CE is first and foremost a fine sounding electro tenor ukulele that plays well and delivers a tone with a warm edge, but with fantastic bold projection. It also has a chamfered edge on the top bout, a stylish touch that makes the uke more comfortable as you play. This model is already known as 'the comfort edge', but to be honest, that caption should be 'a good value all solid tenor electro with a great big voice that happens to have a comfort edge'. But then, that isn't as catchy is it?
This Kala Tenor is given a gloss finish, which potentially lends even more zip to the punchy, well projected sound. There is lovely padauk binding around the edges of the uke, including the sides of the fingerboard and soundhole rosette, and even a bit inlaid into the bridge which is something different and very welcome. The NuBone nut and saddle add to an impressive level of sustain and the florentine cutaway adds a touch of panache, as well as practical access to the upper frets. Aquila's supernylgut series and gold, open geared tuners from Grover complete the picture.
Plugged in and the KA-SRT-CTG-CE sounds great too, using the Kala UK-300TR active preamp system. This, in terms of faithful reproduction of acoustic tone, outranks some of the more well known manafacturers of preamps and pickups (in this writer's opinion at least). It has a handy and reliable built in tuner as well as bass, treble and volume controls.
This really is a lovely uke, with lovely materials used to produce a real winner. It has a comfort edge yes, but overall, it is has the edge over many ukes out there, comfort edge or not!
