This is fascinating, and impressive sounding Ohana tenor ukulele, the 5-string Ohana TK-35G-5. If you aren't familiar with with this 5 string uke and how it is strung, it is quite simple - this tenor has a low and a high G, followed by C, E and A as normal. The result is a really full sound, and a pleasant harmonic effect between the G's. There is plenty of volume, but not just because of the extra string, but across the board. The more complex tone sounds both very pretty and distinctive and really sings, with a unique voice.
The looks are superb, with the high gloss finish really brining out the warm mahogany colour. There is very nice binding in black and white around the edges and the shape of the headstock looks really stylish too. Behind the high gloss finish the mahogany grain of the TK-35G-5 is really pretty, and the frets and rosewood fingerboard are well finished.
As well as all solid mahogany construction, the uke is well appointed in other ways too, with Aquila strings and 5 grover open geared tuners which are light enough not to upset the balance of the TK-35G-5, making it really nice to hold and play. The action is good, and it sounds fantastic strummed. When picked, it is a little trickier with the 5th string in place, but still, easily accomplishable and very rewarding once you master it.
The Ohana TK-35G-5 is unual yes, but in a very good way - offering a full complex tone, with lots going on, and a nice playing experience - all rolled into a uke that looks the business too.
