Boom. This is bloomin' brilliant! The Pono ABD deluxe baritone is simply fantastic! If you've ever seen the film Wayne's World, you'll know the scene where Wayne looks at a Fender Stratocaster in a glass case in a music store, with loving eyes and says 'oh yes, she will be mine, oh yes'. Well that's how our ukulele expert feels about this Pono baritone. It is achingly good!
The all solid acacia gives a really unique tonal projection, with an earthy, woody and deep tone. It is soft and gentle while being at the same time loud and bold. It really is a smasher of a ukulele. You can see from the photos it is a gorgeous looking thing but oh... oh.... OH! The SOUND this thing makes! Woooooo!
As well as the phenomenal tone, the Pono ABD is beautifully put together too, with a smooth, nicely finshed bound fingerboard, a comfortable mahogany neck with position markers noted and a lovely veneer to the headstock, which bears an inlaid Pono logo. The durable geared Pono brand tuners are effortless and effective, so easy to turn yet they hold tuning really well. The nut and saddle are bone and the Ko'olau strings suit the instrument really well.
Pono ukuleles are made by the Ko'olau company of Hawaii at their supervised facility in Indonesia. These gorgeous Pono ukes are then sent to Oahu, Hawaii for their final checks and set up. Unusually, despite Ko'olau being an American company, these ukes are well priced over this side of the Atlantic, meaning if you order a Pono ukulele in the UK, you can use a UK dealer and not lose out in comparison with having one shipped from the US.
If you are in two minds about whether to buy a Pono ABD baritone ukulele, then the the part of your brain that is saying no is so so wrong! You have to have one, it is big, bold, loud, soft, and beautiful - a real gentle giant, with a giant tone.
