Why is there an Ebony insert ? The thinking behind the Ebony insert is to stop the thinner 'E' string cutting into the softer Maple bridge. Usual practice is to use the plastic or parchment sleeve that comes with the string, which sits in the 'E' slot.  Some players feel this method mutes the sound slightly, hence the Ebony insert modification.
